Yorkshire Recruitment Company Director Heads For Haiti To Set Up Disaster Response, 18 January 2010
The Financial Director of an online recruitment company based in Sheffield is heading to Haiti this Wednesday to help establish a disaster response unit. Stephen Mitchell, who has run similar projects in Kosovo, Kenya, Afghanistan, Uganda and Albania, will initially spend two weeks overseas, as well as providing support on a strategic and logistics level when he returns to the UK.
Stephen, who works at national online recruitment company MyJobGroup.co.uk, will be joined in Haiti by his group Chairman - Leslie Buckley of Dublin-based owner Saon Group - and the two will set up a disaster response unit in Port-au-Prince with humanitarian agencies Haven and GOAL.
Whilst Stephen has already gained a significant amount of experience working in disaster-type conditions among conflict situations, Mr Buckley, a successful Irish businessman, set up the charity Haven in Haiti in 2008 with his wife - it builds homes and communities in Haiti.
Stephen Mitchell said: "I spent about 3 years involved in crisis relief work earlier in my career, including time in Kosovo during the war in 1999 working 20-hour days in conditions that have prepared me for those currently being experienced in Haiti, working with people displaced from their homes, and providing vital assistance in order to help them recover.
"Coordination and logistics management are really key right now - there's no phones, water, food nor medical supplies so, working with the other NGOs, we'll be helping to structure procurement to get aid moving. Haven specialise in providing shelter, and therefore we will be looking to quickly establish shelters for people who have lost everything.
"What's happening out there really puts your own job and home life into perspective and we hope that as part of our responsibility as an organisation, we can help where we can, do the right thing and use the skills and experience we've got to support aid efforts.
"Other businesses can help by donating money - currency is what the aid agencies need right now, so we have set up a form on our website where individuals and businesses can donate direct."
